More local adventures in central Portugal

It has been a busy few weeks! It seems ages since we posted last, but we feel the urge to share more about our lovely home and surrounding area. We just hope it’s not too repetitive?

So what have we been up to since our last adventure hiking in the park?

Well, to start off with we did have a spot of bad weather to contend with and then spent a week doing some landscaping and planning. And rather than writing about it you can see it in our video:

Looking after Astro: Dog sitting again!

“He’s a good boy, just a little enthusiastic,” our friend chuckled, handing over Astro’s leash. “Enjoy the hills!” And with that, we found ourselves entrusted with the care of a bouncy, gorgeous dog named Astro, and the promise of another scenic hike through Portugal’s stunning Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park.

Our walk began at our front gate, where several amazing walks start literally on our doorstep.  The rolling hills stretch out like a rumpled green carpet. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the coastal humidity. Astro, sensing the open space, tugged eagerly at his leash, his tail wagging a blur, and off we went.

The trails, marked with weathered signs, wound their way up the slopes, offering breathtaking panoramic views. As we ascended, the landscape transformed. The lush greenery gave way to rocky outcrops, revealing the park’s geological character. The limestone, sculpted by time and weather, created a dramatic and otherworldly terrain.

Astro, initially overwhelmed by the vastness of the space, quickly adapted to his role as intrepid explorer. He sniffed at every rock, chased after butterflies, and occasionally startled a bee buzzing on the hillside. His boundless energy was infectious, and we found ourselves smiling more than we had in days.

Caving with Comrades: Unearthing Wonders in Alvados’ Depths

After collecting Astro, our Canadian friends made plans with us to visit our local caves as it’s something we have neglected to do for ages. A visit to the Caves of São António and Alvados offered a cool and captivating visit with Denis and Danielle. Stepping into the depths of these subterranean wonders felt like entering another world, with the intricate formations of stalactites and stalagmites creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The play of light and shadow highlighted the natural artistry sculpted over millennia, sparking our imaginations. We wandered through the cool, damp caverns, marveling at the sheer scale and the delicate beauty of the rock formations. Sharing this unique experience with our friends, we felt a sense of shared wonder, a reminder of the Earth’s hidden treasures. The experience was a great way to allow any summer visitors to escape the heat, and to enjoy a natural wonder of Portugal.

A Whirlwind Portuguese Adventure: Five Days of Wonders with visitors.

We recently played host to a whirlwind adventure, as Annette’s sister Rachel and her partner Andy embarked on a five-day tour that packed in more cultural and natural marvels than many manage in weeks. Their itinerary, a testament to their adventurous spirit, was a breathtaking sprint through some of Central Portugal’s most iconic and hidden gems.

Their journey began in the charming coastal town of São Martinho do Porto, a picturesque bay known for its tranquil waters and family-friendly atmosphere. A gentle introduction to the region’s beauty, it was the perfect starting point before diving into the dramatic scenery of Nazaré. Here, although the awe-inspiring power of the Atlantic wasn’t at its peak they got to imagine the colossal waves that draw surfers from around the globe. We caught the lift up the dramatic cliffs and saw the vibrant square and historic church that left a lasting impression, a stark contrast to the serenity of São Martinho.

The historical heart of Portugal was next on their agenda. A deep dive into the nation’s rich monastic heritage began with the majestic Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of Cistercian architecture. The poignant love story of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, immortalized in their elaborate tombs, added a layer of romantic tragedy to the grandeur.

Continuing their historical pilgrimage, they ventured to the Monastery of Batalha, another UNESCO gem, its Gothic and Manueline styles a testament to Portugal’s victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota. The intricate stonework and soaring arches left them impressed, a tangible connection to the country’s storied past.

The journey into Portugal’s religious and military history reached its zenith at the Convent of Christ in Tomar. This extraordinary complex, originally a Templar stronghold, seamlessly blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline influences, showcasing centuries of architectural evolution. It was a highlight of the trip, a tangible link to the Knights Templar and the Age of Discoveries.

Seeking a subterranean escape, we explored the captivating Caves of Mira de Aire. This was a bit different to the caves mentioned above. This cave complex is on another level! The stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted by time and water, created a surreal and otherworldly landscape. The cool, damp air usually provide a refreshing respite from the summer heat, although on this day it was shortly after some rains had been, but the sheer scale of the caverns was a humbling reminder of nature’s artistry.

A touch of local industry and history was woven into their adventure with a visit to the Textile Museum in Mira de Aire. Here, they discovered the region’s rich textile heritage, learning about the traditional techniques and the evolution of the industry. It was a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives and crafts of the people who have shaped the region.

Five days, packed with history, nature, and culture, flew by in a blur of stunning vistas and unforgettable experiences. Annette’s sister and Andy embraced the whirlwind tour with enthusiasm, soaking up the beauty and charm of Central Portugal. Their visit was a testament to the region’s diverse offerings, proving that even a short trip can be filled with lasting memories. It was a pleasure to host them, and their adventurous spirit served as a reminder of the endless wonders waiting to be discovered in Portugal.

Portuguese festivals and traditions

Amidst the warm reunions with family and friends, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant local culture, attending both our village festa and the lively carnival in São António. The village festa, a charming, intimate affair, offered a taste of authentic Portuguese tradition, with its lively music, delicious local food, and the joyful spirit of community. In contrast, the carnival in São António burst with color and energy, a riot of costumes, music, and dancing that filled the streets. The infectious enthusiasm of the locals was palpable, and we found ourselves swept up in the joyous celebration. These festive experiences, nestled between cherished moments with loved ones, provided a delightful glimpse into the heart of Portuguese life, creating memories that lingered long after the music faded. We also managed to celebrate this time in our own English way too, as the carnival in Portugal coincides with Pancake day in England! Having our friends come and join in the tasty breakfast was great, especially as they supplied bacon and real Canadian maple syrup!

Wayne has been baking pancakes!
