We are taking a break from talking about the house in this post. We have covered a lot about the build and recently had a visit from our friend Luise from Solo 50plus Adventures. She made a video about the house and so we will link that at the bottom.
Lots of people are also keen to learn about the experiences of things that didn’t go to plan and any down sides to building a new house in Portugal, so we will put a video together all about that shortly.

This post however, is all about hiking around our beautiful park that surrounds us. For us, it’s literally stepping outside on a frosty winter morning and off we go. We have spent a few weeks doing just that, so we thought we would try and take you on a bit of a tour…
So…
Nestled in the heart of Portugal’s limestone massif, the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park offers an enchanting escape into a world where nature, history, and mystery converge. For those seeking an unforgettable hiking experience, the areas around Alvados, Serra de Santo António, and Mendiga are brimming with hidden treasures and breathtaking vistas.

A Landscape Sculpted by Time
The Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park is renowned for its karstic landscape, shaped by millions of years of geological activity. The terrain is marked by dramatic limestone ridges, dolines, and caves, providing an otherworldly backdrop for hikers. Walking through the park feels like stepping into a natural wonderland where rugged beauty and delicate ecosystems coexist.
The park’s limestone features aren’t just striking; they also support rare flora and fauna. Endemic plants such as juniper and aromatic herbs thrive here, while eagles and foxes are frequent companions on the trail. Each step immerses hikers in the rich biodiversity of this unique environment.
Alvados: Gateway to Nature’s Secrets
The charming village of Alvados serves as a perfect starting point for exploring the park. Known for its tranquility and hospitality, Alvados offers access to numerous trails that wind through valleys and over limestone plateaus.
One of the highlights of hiking around Alvados is the Grutas de Alvados (Alvados Caves), a subterranean wonder filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and dazzling mineral formations. After exploring the caves, hikers can ascend nearby trails to witness panoramic views of the rolling hills and ancient olive groves below.
As you wander, the scent of wild thyme and rosemary fills the air, and the silence of the landscape is broken only by birdsong and the rustle of wind through the sparse vegetation. It’s a sensory experience that grounds you in the present moment.

Serra de Santo António: A Panorama of Discovery
A short distance from Alvados lies the Serra de Santo António, where hiking trails offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. This area is ideal for those seeking a more rugged adventure. Trails wind through limestone ridges, past dry stone walls, and into open fields dotted with sheep and goats, tended in the traditional ways of the region.
The “Rota das Grutas” (Cave Route) is a favorite among visitors, combining scenic beauty with opportunities to explore the region’s geological marvels. Caves such as Gruta de Santo António invite hikers to delve beneath the surface and discover the magical underground world of the Serra.
Atop the ridges, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas that stretch as far as the Atlantic Ocean on clear days. This elevated perspective provides a deep appreciation for the park’s intricate limestone formations and the vastness of the surrounding terrain.

Mendiga: Traditions and Trails
Further south, the village of Mendiga offers a blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty. Known for its traditional stonework and warm community spirit, Mendiga provides an authentic taste of rural life in Portugal.
Hiking here is a journey into the past, with trails that pass through ancient threshing floors, traditional wells, and abandoned shepherds’ shelters. The Caminho do Vale das Lapas trail is particularly popular, leading hikers through shaded paths and open valleys filled with geological curiosities. The park’s signature dry, rocky paths are interspersed with lush patches of greenery, creating a striking contrast that stays with you long after the hike.
For a peaceful yet invigorating experience, the area around Mendiga is perfect for slower-paced hikes, allowing you to absorb the beauty of the region while connecting with its traditions.

Seasonal Magic
Every season brings a unique charm to the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park. In spring, the limestone hills burst into bloom, carpeting the trails with wildflowers. Summer offers long, sunlit days perfect for exploring the shaded valleys and caves. Autumn transforms the landscape into a mosaic of golden hues, while winter brings a serene stillness that enhances the park’s mystical atmosphere.
Practical Tips for Hikers
• Footwear: The rugged limestone terrain requires sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
• Navigation: Trails are generally well-marked, but a map or GPS is recommended for longer routes.
• Hydration: Water sources are scarce on the trails, so bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months.
• Respect Nature: The park is a protected area, so follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the delicate ecosystems.
A Journey of Connection
Hiking in the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Nature Park is more than just a physical activity; it’s a journey of connection. Connection to nature, as you traverse landscapes untouched by modern development. Connection to history, as you walk paths shaped by centuries of human and geological activity. And connection to yourself, as the serene beauty of the park inspires reflection and awe.
Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a casual walker, the trails around Alvados, Serra de Santo António, and Mendiga offer a magical experience that will leave you longing to return.
We certainly feel blessed to live in such a diverse and beautiful place!
