A Tale of Seasons: Travanca do Mondego with Energetic Canine Companions
Travanca do Mondego, a quaint Portuguese village, became the backdrop for the start of our housesitting adventures, where we forged lasting bonds with two spirited rescue dogs and an endearing senior Staffie. Our journey unfolded in two distinct chapters—one marked by rainy winter days over Christmas and New Year 2022, and the other later in the year, bathed in the warmth of a sun-kissed summer.
Our first housesitting stint in Travanca do Mondego unfolded during a chilly Christmas and New Year in 2022. The village, adorned with a touch of festive charm, provided a cozy setting for our responsibilities. Three charges to care for. Two energetic rescue dogs (Phoenix and Clyo), full of exuberance and playfulness, and Cassie an older Staffie, welcomed us once again into their world. Despite the rainy and chilly weather, the warmth of their companionship made the winter days merry and bright. fire. The older matriarch of the trio, added a touch of wisdom and gentleness to our daily routine. Together, our days were filled with brisk walks, playful romps in the garden, and cozy evenings by the fireplace. Returning to Travanca do Mondego for a sun-soaked summer housesitting experience brought a different energy to our days. The vibrant hues of green surrounded us as we resumed our roles as caretakers of the lively canine trio. The warm weather transformed the village and its surroundings into a picturesque haven.

A Tale of Two Algarve House-Sits:
In the enchanting region of Algarve, Portugal, the allure of coastal beauty, eclectic culture, and warm hospitality beckons adventurers and house-sitters alike. Two distinct experiences unfolded during our house-sitting journey—one near the coastal gem of Lagos and the other nestled in the picturesque surroundings of nearby Loulé.
Our journey commenced near Lagos, where the rhythmic waves of the Atlantic Ocean set the backdrop for a unique house-sitting escapade. Nestled just outside this historic town, our temporary abode offered sweeping views of the countryside in a very private and tranquil Quinta.
The homeowners entrusted us with the care of their charming villa and a lively quintet of dogs (Tom, Monty, Olive, Benji, & Roo), and a semi-feral cat (ManD)Mornings were filled with invigorating walks around the Quinta. Afternoons were spent exploring the Coastline with Wayne’s sister, Claire who managed to join us for a week or so with the kind permission from the owners.
Exploring Lagos was a delightful adventure. The old town, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings, revealed a rich history intertwined with Moorish and maritime influences. Indulging in local cuisine at quaint cafes and restaurants added a flavorful touch to our stay.
After Claire had departed, Annette had an unfortunate fall which resulted in her hospitalization in Portimão with a broken shoulder and wrist, needing surgery. She was kept there for two weeks awaiting the procedure, but that’s another story. Wayne continued on to the next sit alone.
So, the journey continued eastward to the inland beauty of Loulé, where a different charm awaited. Situated amidst rolling hills and lush landscapes, our house-sit near Loulé provided a serene contrast to the coastal vibrancy of Lagos.
The homeowners, a warm-hearted couple, entrusted us with their countryside residence—a charming villa surrounded by orchards. Our responsibilities included caring for three affectionate cats (Lulu, Ben & Jerry), two rescue dogs (Herbie & Picolé) and tending to the verdant garden. Loulé, known for its vibrant market and historic castle, offered a glimpse into traditional Portuguese life.
The pace near Loulé was relaxed, Annette eventually joined Wayne for the final week allowing us to savor the unhurried rhythm of daily life. A leisurely stroll through the local streets looking for a hospital to change Annette’s dressing was as adventurous it it got for us though.
House-sitting in Algarve near Lagos and Loulé unfolded as rich and diverse experiences—coastal grandeur juxtaposed with the tranquility of the countryside. Both locations offered a unique glimpse into the soul of Algarve, each with its distinctive charm and cultural abundance. Whether absorbing the coastal breeze near Lagos or immersing in the inland serenity of Loulé, our Algarve house-sitting adventure left us with cherished memories of Portugal’s southern gem.

A Spanish House-Sit Adventure!
Nestled at the edge of rural Spain, our house-sitting escapade offered a taste of tranquility and a menagerie of delightful responsibilities. Taking care of pygmy goats, two loyal livestock guardian dogs (Wilma & Betty), and a curious cat (Natalie), our temporary home on a Spanish farm became a haven of rustic charm and warm companionship. Amidst the sun-drenched days, we explored the local gems of Valencia de Alcántara, Marvao, Castelo de Vide, and Portalegre.
Our hosts welcomed us to their idyllic farm, surrounded by rolling hills and a symphony of nature. Caring for the pygmy goats proved to be both endearing and entertaining as their playful antics added a touch of whimsy to our daily routine. The two majestic livestock guardian dogs, stalwart protectors of the farm, became our steadfast companions, their watchful eyes ensuring the harmony of the rural landscape.
A feline friend, the farm’s resident cat, gracefully roamed the grounds, occasionally joining us during our daily rounds. Its presence added a touch of elegance to the rustic charm, weaving seamlessly into the fabric of our daily routines.
Venturing beyond the farm gates, we discovered the enchanting town of Valencia de Alcántara. Rich in history and adorned with cobblestone streets, the town provided a glimpse into the region’s cultural tapestry. Local markets, adorned with vibrant produce, showcased the abundance of the land, and friendly interactions with locals added to the warmth of the experience.
Embracing the proximity to Portugal, our short visits to Marvao, Castelo de Vide, and Portalegre offered a delightful blend of culture and convenience. Marvao’s medieval charm, Castelo de Vide’s historic allure, and Portalegre’s supermarkets provided a diverse palette of experiences. Crossing borders for shopping expeditions brought a unique dimension to our stay, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Iberian landscape, mixed with time zone confusion!
Blessed with consistently warm weather, our days were filled with outdoor adventures. Whether exploring the winding streets of nearby towns or basking in the sunlit tranquility of the farm, each day unfolded as a chapter in a pastoral tale. The local area’s richness, both in cultural heritage and natural beauty, became an integral part of our Spanish sojourn. An interesting anniversary dinner at a local restaurant where no one spoke English and we knowing no Spanish was a fun highlight, especially when all the lights went out!
We were also graciously fed and enjoyed some salubrious hospitality by neighbors who we met during the stay. The walk back to the farm in the wee hours was fun too.
Our time on the Spanish farm, caring for pygmy goats, guardian dogs, and a feline companion, became a chapter of cherished memories. Amidst the warmth of the Iberian sun, our exploration of Valencia de Alcántara and nearby Portuguese towns added cultural depth to our experience. This house-sit, with its rural idyll and the tapestry of local excursions, exemplified the harmonious blend of nature, companionship, and cultural discovery.
