At the end of our last post we were still at Salgados overlooking Nazaré. So we will start there too…
House sitting for two laid-back cats is a delightful experience. The atmosphere was calm, with the occasional purring creating a soothing backdrop. Mornings consisted of them getting fed with their automated feeders and getting a drink from their water fountains before standing outside our bedroom telling us to get up! This was followed by leisurely play sessions. The afternoons were spent basking in the sunlight as the cats napped peacefully. Evenings brung the joy of gentle cuddles and relaxed companionship. Overall, this easy house sit provides a tranquil environment, and allowed us to enjoy the simple pleasures of feline company in an stress-free setting. This easygoing routine also allowed us some free time in which to pop over and check the house-building progress and to catch up with our neighbors.

Gathering with neighbors for a pre-Christmas meal was a heartwarming affair, filled with festive cheer and the warmth of community. Bruce and Paula graciously took on the role of hosts, orchestrating a culinary masterpiece that left our taste buds in awe. The tantalizing aromas wafting from their kitchen set the stage for an evening of laughter and camaraderie. As we sat around the table adorned with holiday decorations, sharing stories and savoring every delicious bite, it became a cherished moment of togetherness. Knowing we wouldn’t all be able to meet during the busy Christmas period, this early celebration became a treasured memory, a testament to the bonds of friendship that make the holiday season truly special.

The house build continues to progress and the MVHR system first-fix ducting and equipment has been installed, work is commencing on the ceilings and walls with all the drywall being delivered and they were fitting some when we checked in last time. We also noticed that they had started putting the vapor barrier on the section of external wall around where the house wraps around the old olive tree which was good to see.
We hope our new house will blend harmoniously with its surroundings, featuring a modern design in a natrual aesthetic. Eventually we hope the landscaping will complement the architecture, creating a balanced and inviting atmosphere. The placement of windows and outdoor spaces will maximize natural light and showcase the scenic views, enhancing the overall connection between our home and the environment.
It was only a quick visit though to collect the meter readings before popping over to Alcobaça to get a pre-visit at our next house sit and take the dogs for a quick walk to learn about their routines etc.

Getting acquainted with our upcoming house-sit dogs was a delightful experience, made even more enjoyable by meeting their owners beforehand. The couple, warm and welcoming, instantly put us at ease. As we chatted about the routines and preferences of their two companions, it became clear that our stay would be a joy. To our delight, the afternoon unfolded into a pleasant surprise as we shared a lovely meal and uncorked a bottle of wine together. The atmosphere was convivial, filled with laughter and stories that deepened our connection. Grateful for the opportunity to bond with both the amiable homeowners and the upcoming doggy companions, we left with a sense of anticipation and the assurance that the week ahead would be marked by not only responsible pet care but also newfound friendships.
Our two feisty charges for the stay in Alcobaça, were Kyra and Charlie. Two young dogs, Kyra (2 years) and Charlie (9 months). So we knew we would have some fun times with these two. Charlie is still so young he reacts with other dogs, so he was constantly on the lead, whereas Kyra being a bit more mature (and intellgent) was more pliable and trusted off the lead much more.
We really enjoyed their companionship though and they were so lovable and gave us hours of fun on our long walks in the surrounding hills. Luckily there was a large orchard nearby where they were free to run themselves ragged and we were treated to loads of laughs with their antics and chases! Kyra was definitely the attention seeker and Charlie was the attention thief!

But additional to these sits, we did find time, during the run up to Christmas, to connect with some old friends and make some new ones too. We met up with the hosts of a previous sit While they were in Leiria. Kathryn was taking her daughter Kazia to have her biometric card appointment. We had a great catch-up and they left us with a bag of their delicious mandarins from their garden. We also met up with Catherine and Vince, our pals from Nazare and their friends Emma and George for an amazing burger extravaganza in Alcobaça at “Meat”. And we had a meeting with our neighbors from the local area enjoying an outside lunch at Atelier de Doce in glorious sunshine. We even met up and gave a tour of the house with Kirsty and Davie and their two lovely golden retrievers Cooper & Sonny! All in all a great Christmas break!

Finally, wishing you a resplendent Yuletide season adorned with joyous festivities and a New Year poised to unfold like a tapestry of boundless possibilities. May the symphony of merriment serenade your days and the dawn of a fresh annum bring you prosperity, harmony, and a kaleidoscope of cherished moments. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
